Creative Problem Solving
For my creative problem solving artifact that shows how I have grown in this department, I chose my first GEL-111 lab work. Below is the final result of my first geology which was about earthquakes. The project primarily focuses on the use of a seismometer to detect the movement of energy cause by an earthquake and how P and S waves work. For this assignment, the lab required us to use google earth with some information that we were given to detect the point where the earthquake had originated. The way that we would be able to tell of the point of origin is if the lines of the three circles intersected one another. while the finals result was not perfect, it showed me how scientist use these devices to track earthquakes and study them. When I first viewed this assignment, I was very intimidated. I thought to myself on how I was be able to get the sheer amount of work done with so little time to do it. After I had begun work on this project, I realized that it was not as hard as I thought it was going to be and was surprised with how much I learned overall from it. I guess you can learn things under a time crunch huh? That is perhaps one of the best things that I have obtained here at SPCC. It is that of being able to work under pressure. Whether it be a deadline or a time limit, all of these experiences through the assignments that I have completed have helped me learn how to critically analyze the details of an assignment so I complete it correct and efficiently. These skills in problem solving will help me in the future as I overcome the challenges ahead of me.
Communication Competence
The artifact that I have selected to represent my competency in communication that a have obtained thanks to my studies at SPPC is my ART-111 PowerPoint which is about Raphael's painting "Disputation of the Most Holy Sacrament". I chose this artifact to represent this learning outcome because I believe that it helps communicate a piece of artwork to people that they may have a deep understanding about. When we think of the big artist of the renaissance period, we often prone to think about an artist like Michelangelo instantly thanks to his incredibly well known works. Raphael, although is still a well known painter, has many works that people tend not to immediately think of when it comes to artworks from this time period. In this project, I was able to learn more about this artwork and the painter who made it. I also learned about the people who commissioned it as well as some of the analytic points that other art critics made of this work. In this assignment, I really wanted show to overall competency of my overall communication. I had been fortunate enough to take public speaking at the same time of this class and have had much public speaking experience beforehand. I felt like I was able to communicate the information concerning this topic and thoughts on this effectively which demonstrates this learning outcome of being a very effective and competent communicator which prepare me for the rest of my life which is ahead of me.
Understanding the Arts and the Human Experience
My artifact that shows my overall understanding of the arts and the human experience is an art critique of Claude Monet's Water Lilies from ART-111. I chose this artwork to write for my critique because I have always been fascinated with his artwork and overall impressed with the sheer scale of this feat. Prior to my enrollment at SPCC, I was fortunate to visit his home located in Giverny where the inspiration for much of his art, including his water lilies, originated from. along with that, I also had the privilege to view this artwork with my own eyes at the Musee de l'Orangerie. These things contributed to my idea of critiquing the water lilies for my art critique project. One thing that I learned about this assignment is that critiquing and analyzing art is actually no easy task. It forces you to critically think about each single brush stroke made or the choice of color scheme that was made in the art. Not only that, but you have to connect how all of these things relate back to the title of the artwork. It forces you to use your imagination in a way that I am not accustomed to. Although I play music, creating something of your own is quite daunting and these artists, whether they be of music or other fine arts, deserve a high amount of praise for what they have been able to accomplish. They came over the challenge of trying to materialize their own thoughts, desires, and imagination onto a canvas for the world to see and reminds me to keep working to overcome my challenges that I choose to take upon myself.
Social Scientific Literacy
My artifact that represents the outcome of Social Scientific Literacy was my final paper assignment from HIS-111. In this assignment, I wrote about two major points of world history which were that of the Renaissance and the Reformation. For the Renaissance, my topic was to discuss how the Renaissance had simply picked up where the Greeks and Romans had left off and that the Renaissance was continuation of this period in history of great human growth. On the other hand, the topic behind the Reformation was the effects of the reformation throughout the entire world and how it shaped not only history in Europe, but the history in the west that was soon to be discovered. When I chose these topics to write about, I had already been very familiar with these and what came from. Some of these things include inventions from the Renaissance and different Christian denominations from the reformation. However, I had wanted to talk about the influence behind these mass worldwide events and the effects on the world that they would have. That was my exact goal through this assignment. It was my job to take a current topic and put under a different context in order to make a spin on it in a different way. It was also my intention to show how these events in history affected us all to point of where our world currently is in our present moment. It is all because of these pivotal moments in history which has brought our world to where we are today. I plan to think and write more critically about different events in history and overcome those challenges with ease.
